Former prisoner shot three times
A 36-year-old former prisoner was shot three times in the head by a lone gunman in the vicinity of Despers Pan tent Laventille on Wednesday night. Reports revealed that around 8.30 pm, Owen Grant of Boxhill Trace, Laventille, was standing near to the pan tent when he was approached by a guman who fired three shots striking Grant in the head. Grant slumped to the ground and died. Officers of the Besson Street Police Station were alerted and the body was viewed by the District Medical officer who ordered its removal to the Forensic Science Centre.
Grant’s death brings the number of persons murdered for the year to 250. Police investigators told Newsday that Grant was recently released from prison after serving 12 years. He was wanted in connection with two robberies and a kidnapping. Police sources said yesterday that Grant was in hiding when he learned that he was being sought for questioning. However, relatives of the dead man disputed the claim by the police. They said he was trying to lead an honest life and was not involved in any crime. They are calling on the police to find his killer and bring him to justice. An autospy at the Forensic Science Centre by Dr Hughvon Des Vignes revealed that death was due to shock and haemorrhage consistent with gunshot wounds.
