Weedon cruises into RBTT tennis final

CHRISTMAS came early for several players in the RBTT Junior Tennis Tournament. Cheyenne Lutchman (Under-14), Samantha De Gannes (Under-16), Taphenes Koroma (Under-10), Samantha Cruickshank (Under-12) and Brent King (Under-16) were all crowned champions at the PSA tennis facility in St James. Lutchman triumphed in a hard fought final against Lee Anne Lingo which ended 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-1 to give her the Girls Under-14 title and Amunu Adogwa fell 6-1, 6-0 to De Gannes, the 2004 Girls Under-16 champ in convincing fashion.

In the Girls Under-10 final Koroma went  past Olivia Mitchell 6-4, 6-2 to claim the title, Cruickshank beat Amy de Freitas 8-1 in their Girls Under-12 final. King had to stave off Devon Burris’ best efforts in the Boys Under-16 final to take a well deserved 6-3, 7-6 (3) tiebreak victory. Anastasia Weedon was the most convincing winner of the day, untroubled by Sanian Lewis in their Girls Under-18 semi-final and shut her out 6-0, 6-0. She advances to today’s finals against Shenelle Mohammed who beat Kiran Pereira 6-3, 7-6 (2) in the other semi-final. In other matches yesterday James Mitchell beat Chad Rocke 6-4, 6-2 in the Boys Under-10 semi-final. He will play Chase Paul, the 6-1, 6-3 winner over Jaulon Greene in the other semi-final in the division.

Keegan De Silva and Luke De Caires both advanced to the Boys Under-12 final after semi-final victories over Karl Pilstl, 6-2, 6-3, and John Lutchman 6-7(8), 6-4, 6-2 respectively. Today’s action begins with the Weedon versus Mohammed Girls Under-18 final, followed by the Boys Under-12 final between De Silva and De Caires; the Boys Under-10 final between Chase and Mitchell; the Simeon Sealy and Richard Chung Boys Under-18 final; and the Junior Girls, Girls 16-18 and Boys Under-14 doubles finals. The prize giving ceremony will signal the official close of the competition which has been running from December 16.
