Tobago will host 32nd CARIFTA Games
PRESIDENT OF the National Amateur Athletic Association (NAAA) of Trinidad and Tobago Ken Doldron says that preparations for the 2005 edition of the CARIFTA games in Tobago are finally beginning to take shape. Speaking to CMC Sport, just 24 hours after stating that Tobago’s hosting of the games was in trouble because of infrastructure delays, Doldron expects preparations to be completed a month before the start of the 32nd edition of the games. “One article in the press and immediately I got calls from the Minister (Sports), the Director of Sports and the Chairman from the Tobago House of Assembly. “The money has been found and they invited me to a meeting (yesterday), to start the work at the stadium immediately.”
Doldron also explained that Mondo, the company that has been contracted to lay the running track, has been contacted and the necessary arrangements have been made. “Mondo has been contacted to ship the things immediately so that we would have the track and facilities ready by the first week in March.” Trinidad and Tobago won the bid for the games after previous hosts Grenada withdrew after the destruction of Hurricane Ivan in that country. Barbados played host to the first edition of the games in 1972 in Bridgetown, with Jamaica being the perennial champions of the region’s premier junior track and field event. (CMC)
