Flights back to normal at leaky airport

THE SCENE at Piarco International Airport on yesterday’s Boxing Day holiday, was a far cry from what happened on Sunday. On Sunday morning, BWIA flight 484 to Miami was delayed, leaving disgruntled passengers stranded for ten hours. A number of passengers were put on a 4 pm American Airlines flight, while others opted to wait on a BWIA flight at 6 pm.

Around midday yesterday, all flights were moving smoothly with the exception of one flight, BW 608 to Toronto, which was supposed to leave at 2 pm — it was delayed by one and a half hours. However, there were no angry mobs or passengers rummaging for lost luggage at the BWIA counters yesterday. BWIA passengers were seen checking in baggage at a normal rate, with no complaints of delays or “unprofessional staff.” Even as the situation at the airport seemed to return to a state of normalcy, however, visitors to the airport were greeted by a leaking atrium roof. The central area of the airport, where families would bid farewell to their loved ones, quickly filled with tiny pools of water. Airport staff members were called in to place signs, and worked feverishly to keep the floors dry.
