22-year-old on double-murder charge

A twenty-two year old man appeared yesterday before a Justice of the Peace in the Port-of-Spain Magistrate’s Court charged with murder. Keron Lopez of Caledonia, Morvant, who appeared before JP Sieunarine was not called upon to plead as the charge was laid indictably. Lopez is charged with the double murder of 20 year old Kerwin Cyrus of Couva and Kerwin Hinds of Diego Martin. Both men were shot to death on July 28, at Sawmill Avenue, Barataria.

According to sources, Lopez was arrested on Tuesday afternoon following surveillance of an area in Morvant where he was located for some time. Inspector Ancil Coa of the Morvant Police Station laid the charge. Another accused, Garvin “Beam” Sookram, a few months ago, was committed to stand trial at the next sitting of the Assizes for the same two murders. Chief Magistrate Sherman Mc Nicolls, after hearing the evidence of 14 witnesses, ruled that a prima facie case had been made out against Sookram. Lopez will return to court today where he will reappear before a Port-of-Spain Magistrate.
