Digicel bid farewell to West Indies

BARBADOS: Digicel Group, the fastest growing mobile telecommunications company in the Caribbean and the official title sponsor of West Indies cricket, waved the team off today at Grantley Adams International Airport, Barbados, as they departed for Australia, looking forward to victory in next month’s one-day tri-series. The squad comprises 16 top-notch players including legendary batsman Brian Lara, who continues as captain of the team.

Digicel welcomed the announcement on Christmas Eve by the WICB of the final squad selection. Raoul Fontanez, Group CEO of Digicel stated, “We are delighted the team is now in place and on its way to Australia. “ The people of the Caribbean can now look forward to an exacting one-day tri-series in Australia. We have the utmost respect for the sport of cricket and what it means to the people of the Caribbean. “The legacy of the West Indies cricket team and its leadership is crucial to the game, as well as the team’s success and future. Digicel’s commitment to the entire team from the captain to the coach to the fans is unwavering. “We look forward to a great new year gift of victory in Australia for the Caribbean people.”

With the largest single investment in West Indies cricket, The Bigger Better cricket sponsorship will now kick into high gear. The sponsorship sets an unprecedented level of player incentives including performance bonuses up to US$1.7 million. In addition, Digicel has created an innovative broadcast rights arrangement, which means that apart from all the home and away West Indies matches, fans will be able to watch all major international games including the Australia tour.

West Indies Cricket players received Digicel Motorola V300 packed with the latest features including camera, games, and texting so they could stay connected when they depart on Wednesday 29. As part of the “Bigger Better” cricket sponsorship, Digicel will give fans the opportunity to interact with players on tour via personal diary on their mobile phones. Fontanez added, “This is a new era in West Indies Cricket, and we are pleased that a resolution is in place that recognises and provides value to the people and organisations supporting the loyal fans, the skilled team, and the sport of cricket. Digicel has always been and remains focused on providing the necessary resources to help grow West Indies Cricket to its true potential so everyone can enjoy its benefits.”
