Carnival — a big boost for immorality

THE EDITOR: As Carnival season comes around again, millions of dollars are spent on staging what some say is the Greatest Show on Earth, so that everyone can indulge in riotous revelry. Can any year Carnival pass without any reports of heinous crimes? On television all you can see is a bunch of people who look as if they don’t even know about the word modesty. People disgrace themselves dressed in next-to-nothing and by dancing in the most degrading manner, as they celebrate our culture. The men behave erotic while the women act as if they are now going to be deflowered.

The moral standards of our society are being depreciated, while the festival brings out the negative attitude of the participants.  Our country’s economy is not the only thing that gets a boost, but also immorality. Pan players are often displeased about payments for displaying their talent and skill. What about seminars and workshops to train bandleaders in management and PR, and also to upgrade players playing skills and their ability to read and understand music notation. There are few arrangers and many bands. If one was to weigh the positive effects alone with the negative what would the results be?

If the negative outweigh the positive, will there be any measures taken to reduce the violence and immorality. Then what about if it is vice-versa, are we willing to risk the better things in life that is worth more than money? The citizens of TT should be concerned about changing the culture of our children. Some of our great ancestors are using history to commit verbal revenge. They do not know themselves. They are Caribbean people. That is their identity. They won’t find their identity in Europe or India or Africa. A panman is not great because he is an African. He is a West Indian.
