Two cops shot
Two police officers suffered gunshot injuries on Friday when a loaded UZI was accidently fired by a police constable attached to the Homicide Bureau. The drama started around 6.45 pm when PC Francis attached to the Homicide Bureau was issued with the UZI which contained one magazine. Reports revealed that the constable was clearing the UZI when it was accidently fired causing 15 bullets to be sprayed in all directions. Police officers milling around the lobby area and the sentry officers all scampered for safety. PC Dyer of the Guard and Emergency Branch and PC Henry of Finance Branch were not so lucky.
PC Dyer was shot in the back while PC Henry suffered injuries to his right foot. Both officers were rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where they were treated. A report was made to the Head of the Port-of-Spain Division Snr Supt Errol Denoon and an investigation was launched. ASP Julie Carrington was detailed to carry out the probe. PC Francis was asked to give a statement on the incident, while other police officers who witnessed the incident were also asked to submit written statements on the incident. The UZI was seized by investigators.
