Laventille mother and daughter escape death

A Laventille mom, her one-year-old baby, and a neighbour, missed being crushed by a 70-year-old wall by mere seconds. According to reports, at around 5 pm Carla Madeira  was at home nursing her baby when residents along Foster Street, John John, saw part of a wall located at the top of a hill behind her house collapse. They then saw the the 70-year-old wall cascading towards the house. The residents called out to Carla and as she came out the house, the entire wall collapsed, crashing on her house and the adjoining house where another person had to run for his life. Both tenants ran out the house losing everything in the process. Twelve persons, including five children, were rendered homeless.

“The wall,”(located at the back of executed former high-ranking Muslimeen Mark Guerra) “started cracking one year ago and we were now in the process of knocking it down and putting something in its place,” according to Guerra’s wife Pearl Nurse. “The mason had already taken measurements and was supposed to start this weekend. “Yes, we saw the cracks and when the wall started to fall luckily we were there to call out to Carla or who knows what would have happened. I am sorry for what has happened and presently (I am) looking for accommodation for our sister and child. “That wall was part of an old empty storeroom, the only reason we did not break it down before is because we are poor, small people and had no money. Our next move is to seek the assistance of our MP Eric Williams and other government agencies.”
