Rain plays mas with children’s Carnival
The Flying Fish Swim Club Annual Children’s Carnival Competition got off to a wet start, yesterday at the PSA Grounds, St James as intermittent showers interrupted the flow of the event. Some masqueraders had to be escorted under umbrellas as they appeared before the judges while others were delayed in traffic and appeared after their category had passed. As a result of the late arrival of masqueraders, results too, were delayed.
Their was a fair turnout as the event began at 12.30 pm with only two masqueraders appearing in the Babes In Arms Category. Proceedings were halted an hour later due to heavy rains and resumed sometime after 2 pm. However, despite the rain and the muddy grounds, the children seemed keen on displaying their costumes. There were a lot of creative themes such as “Aiyo Pancho” — a set of colourful kites effectively manoeuvred on a roll twine by Ethan Hutchinson, “A Midnight Robbers Dream” portrayed by Zak Correira in the Boys 5-6 category, and “Mamma Anna Crab and Callaloo” played by Reanna Ward in the Girls 5-6 category.
A rich use of colour was evident in the costumes “Pumpkin Vine Family, “Golden Pineapple,” and “Come Lets Samba,” the latter portrayed by Nefertare Phillips in the Girls 2-4 category, as well as “The Ring Bearer,” “The Warrior” and “Oriental Splendour” portrayed by Silone Mc Dowell. Among the categories were Babes In Arms, Couples, Floats, categories 2-4, 5-6, 7-9, 10-12 and 13 and over boys and girls. Queen and King of Carnival, Parade of Small, Medium and Large Bands followed.
