Siparia family held with drugs, firearms
A SIPARIA family is expected to appear in court today after narcotics, firearms and ammunition were allegedly found in their house by police. The family — a 46-year-old man, his 42-year-old wife, and 17-year-old son — was held at their home at Mendez Village on Saturday morning by policemen conducting an exercise in the Siparia district. It is alleged that some 25 grammes of marijuana, a home-made shotgun, and five rounds of 16-guage shotgun cartridges were discovered in the bedroom of the house.
A joint police team comprising of officers from the South Western Task Force, and Siparia CID arrested the relatives after conducting a raid on the house around 7 am. The three relatives are expected to be taken before a Siparia magistrate today charged with possession of marijuana, firearms and ammunition. The charges were laid by PCs Ramjag and Kern Alexander. The three were among 57 persons arrested during the police exercise which was conducted between 3 am and 9 am Saturday. The six-hour exercise was coordinated by Senior Supt Faye Nimrod, and led by Ag Insp Michael Wells. The others arrested were detained for outstanding warrants, reports of breaking and entering, and possession of narcotics. They are also expected to be taken before a Siparia magistrate today.
