Car plunges into river — one dead, two critical

POLICE officers dived into a river early yesterday morning to rescue two men from a vehicle which crashed through a bridge and plunged into the river at Mosquito Creek, La Romaine. The men, Dexter Darius, 22, and Kester Moody, 32, of Fullerton Village, Cedros, along with Kevin Bharat, 24, underwent emergency surgery at the San Fernando General Hospital.

Moody died yesterday afternoon, while Darius and Bharat remain in critical condition. Passersby yesterday reported seeing a body floating in the river but when police arrived nothing was found and the Coast Guard were called in. The accident occurred around 4 am. Moody was driving his green Honda Civic, PBH 1574, in the vicinity of the Shore of Peace, when it crashed into the bridge, and plunged ten feet into the river. Motorists who witnessed the horrific accident contacted the police and PCs Krishna Sookdeo and Rishi Ramsaran, of the Oropouche Police Station responded. On arrival, PC Sookdeo took off his clothes and dived into the water.

Moody and the front seat passenger were unconscious, bleeding and trapped inside the vehicle. With the assistance of another officer, Sookdeo was able to pull two men out of the mangled wreck. Blood was seeping out of Moody’s mouth and he was not breathing. PC Sookdeo, with the assistance of PC Ramsaran, performed CPR on Moody. The third injured man, Bharat, 24, of Fullerton was found by a fisherman unconscious in a nearby mangrove. Investigators said the men had not regained consciousness up to late yesterday and they were unable to take any statements. They were trying to contact the victims’ relatives.
