Champs Wanderers start on winning note

DEFENDING champions W Connection Wanderers made a successful start to the defence of their Carib Sunday League cricket title yesterday with an emphatic 73-run victory over Mayo Valley Boys in fifth round action. Joel Pamphille scored 69 and Andre Brown got 43 to lead the champs to 225 for nine wickets in their 50 overs.

Then Kishore Lalchan grabbed three wickets for four runs and Atiba Alert took two for 40 to rout Mayo Valley Boys for 152 in 37 overs. The Sunday league was originally scheduled to being on January 9 but unseasonal rains have prevented the competition from getting underway until yesterday. In another feature match yesterday Tile it Central Sports scored a surprise six-wicket victory over star-studded Merry Boys. After bowling out Merry Boys for 136 with Sanjee Maharaj taking two wickets for 19 runs, the Central men rattled up 138 for four wickets, with Maharaj completing a good allround match scoring 32 not out.

Derwin Christian contributed 28. And Alescon Comet whipped Defence Force by four wickets after dismissing the Army-Coast Guard men for 213 in their 49.4 overs, after Rajendra Mangallie took three for 28. Halsey Netto topscored for Defence Force with 61. Comet replied with 214 for six wickets off 45 overs, with Guyanese Travis Dowling scored 67 not out and Chris Magram had 46 and Manooj Sirju 33.
