Garbage pile up delays South Panorama finals
Mounds of garbage from Saturday’s Calypso Fiesta competition caused a late start to yesterday’s South Panorama finals at Skinner Park, San Fernando. South/ Central chairman, Withfield Weekes, in apologising for the late start, said over 400 bags of garbage had been collected by San Fernando City Corporation workers, who had begun cleaning the venue during the early hours of Sunday morning. The competition, originally carded to begin at 12 noon, was eventually started at 4 pm, by the T&TEC Gayatones.
Some 17 conventional steelbands are competed for the $50,000 first place prize, including such legendary bands as NLCB Fonclaire, TCL Skiffle Bunch and Petrotrin Hatters. While eight traditional bands competed for a first place prize worth $15,000. Results are expected to be announced at the end of today’s finals.
Prizes in the conventional category are:-
1st prize: $50,000; 2nd prize: $37,500; 3rd prize: $25,000; 4th prize: $20,000; 5th -8th prizes: $15,000; 9th-18th prizes: $10,000. With each band receiving an appearance prize of $5,000.
While prizes in the traditional category are:- 1st prize: $15,000; 2nd prize: $10,000; 3rd prize: $7,500; 4th prize: $5,000; 5th-8th $4,000.
With each band recieving an appearance prize of $1,250.
