Death manifests reality
THE EDITOR: The prime minister’s call for the nation to repent and pray in the wake of the death of his friend Carl Stone is revealing. Up until this point, Mr Manning has been doing his best to downplay the crime situation. He seemed bent on making us believe that the record setting numbers of murders, abductions, robberies, etc were either exaggerated by the media or figments of mass hysteria. Now that reality hits him a bit closer to home, he changes his tune ever so slightly.
He hints that crime might indeed be a cause for concern. Worse, he has the temerity to bring the Almighty into the equation — as though we haven’t been in need of divine intervention during the past two years. Mr Stone’s death is tragic and I extend my sympathies to all those affected by his loss. But I say the only person who has to pray and repent is Mr Manning himself. The best thing he can do for his friend is to address the circumstances that killed him.
