South Carnival Kings, Queens dazzle with colour

WEDNESDAY night’s staging of the pre- Dimanche Gras show in South proved to be a great success with the Calypso Monarch and the Kings and Queens of the Bands titles being contested. Before a small but appreciative crowd who gathered at Skinner Park, reigning South Calypso Monarch Brian London withstood stiff competition from such southern calypso icons as Llewellyn “Short Pants” McIntosh and Marsha Charles. In the Kings of the Bands category, Leroy Prieto’s portrayal of “Clowns” captured first place while Deborah Nandah ruled the Queens category, with “We Pan.” Newsday’s south lensman DAVE PERSAD was on hand and brought back a sample of the colour and pageantry that was South Dimanche Gras.
