More assistance for unemployed youth

THE EDITOR: I wish to make an open appeal to the Government of the day to do more to help the young unemployed youth in our society. Recently I was travelling through east Port-of-Spain early in the morning to go to the Port-of-Spain clinic and I was approached by a young man who asked me for some fine change. When I asked the young fellow if he was working he said work was very hard to get and that CEPEP was only temporary and that wasn’t enough to support his wife and two children.

The authorities must understand that while CEPEP offers assistance to many families and I personally have no objection to that because some of my family and friends are working in CEPEP, it is only temporary and a lot of young families need a strong solid form of income. One suggestion that I have that could probably help the situation is that the Ministry of Labour can advertise vacancies in the media so that these jobs can be filled by our youth instead of them being frustrated. In doing this, then poverty can properly be eradicated.
