Devon Smith blasts 135 n.o.
CHARLOTTE AMALIE: Devon Smith compiled a polished unbeaten century to earn the Windward Islands first innings points against the Leeward Islands on the second day of their four-day Carib Beer Series regional cricket match at the Addelita Cancryn Ground yesterday. Smith, who will resume on 135, shared in an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 123 with wicket-keeper/ batsman Junior Murray, who was 61 not out. At the close, the Windwards were 279 for three in reply to the Leewards 262 all out.
However, the day belonged to left-handed Smith after Darren Sammy took one of the two wickets to wrap up the Leewards innings, about 15 minutes into the day’s play when they resumed on 252 for eight. Sammy finished with career-best figures of six for 50 from 17 overs and his captain Rawle Lewis took two for 50. On a pitch, which kept low throughout the day and offered little or no assistance to the bowlers, Smith and Murray dominated the Leewards in a post-tea partnership that swung the match in the Windwards’ favour, after they lost two quick wickets before and after the interval. Smith compiled his seventh regional century and has so far batted for 326 minutes and struck 16 fours and a six, a lofted straight drive off Banks onto the roof of the commentary box.
