Young composers gunned down
TWO teenaged composers trying to break into the local musical market yesterday became murder victims 28 and 29 respectively. Keon Sergeant, 19 and Zimba Gordon, 18, were gunned down yesterday morning at a fete on Coconut Drive, Morvant, where they went to show off their musical skills. According to reports, around 12.30 am, party-goers attending the fete heard several gunshots and a scramble ensued. After which the two teens were found dead with several gunshots wounds to head and body.
Investigations revealed that earlier in the fete there was a fight and a stabbing. And out of that stabbing the shootings took place. When Newsday visited Sergeant’s family at Upper Malick, Barataria his relatives refused to speak. An aunt of Gordon who lives nearby described her nephew as a quiet young man who recently formed a group “The Linkage Crew” which does rap, soca, R and B and different types of music and was using the fete as an opportunity to promote his talent. “Zimba who is the main writer and Keon who organised getting gigs had gone to perform at a house party, the people at the house party took them to this other paid party to do some promotions. Instead my nephew winds up dead. As far as I am aware the organiser of this paid party had no permit, someone must be made to pay for this innocent death. Right now I am not sure what I want but I surely want justice,” said Keon’s aunt.
The carnival fete was held at the “Basement” on Coconut Drive, Morvant. Police sources, when contacted, confirmed that while they suspect the shooting was gang related, they believe Zimba and Keon were not connected but knew the persons who were involved in the stabbing brawl minutes before and were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Officials of the fete venue refused to speak to the media. Cpl McMillan of the Morvant police is investigating.
