Citizens deserve better

THE EDITOR: It is with complete depression and gloom, not only for myself, but also for the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago, that I write this letter. Yesterday, I visited a prominent supermarket as I do every month, in order to do my shopping. Imagine my shock and surprise on getting the bill, which revealed that although I had purchased less than my normal amount of groceries, which usually amounted to approximately $1,300, this bill amounted to at least $200 more. I paid the bill since I had no choice. Everything that I had purchased were necessities. However, it made me reflect on how difficult it is to simply live in Trinidad and Tobago now.  All the prices have risen.

Unemployment has increased, in spite of the politicians trying to fool us and say otherwise. The standard of living has dropped. Crime has risen. People are afraid to walk the streets and are now prisoners in their own homes. The standard of education itself appears to also be dropping. The citizens are blinded by loyalty to their preferred political party and are willing to play ignorant and accept wholesale whatever the politicians say. We need to take stock of the difference in lifestyles between the politicians and the citizens. While the politicians go abroad for treatment, we have to depend on our health system, which is poor. There is a lot of money flowing in the country. We deserve a better lifestyle. But according to my husband, we like it so.
