Vision 2020 wins Jouvert in Couva

VISION 2020, led by attorney at law Dave Persad and Saraz Ali, and based in Mc Bean, Couva, was a clear winner in the Jouvert Competition at the Couva Car Park yesterday morning. The band poked political fun at the promoters of the 2020 Vision with Persad himself holding on to “Ah Boo is the PM.” One placard said the aim of the 2020 vision is to destroy the Apaches, while another said that  “Patrick eh Moving.” One woman, Evelyn Wellington, who was selected as the Jouvert Queen portrayed that “the Cat helped the PNM to win the THA elections,” and the one that provoked much laughter was “Sat and Cudjoe Make Up.”

Jouvert People of Perseverance Village, Couva, led by Imnath Seemungal, felt that the PNM had “too many Chinese” — Chin Lee, Row-Lee and Vall-Lee, while Harry Beddoe, with Tourists Arrive, from Dow Village in California, was heavy on names like Opra Win Free, Tony Blare, and Mike Tie Sin. In all, six bands crossed the stage, with the Jouvert King Andy Baldeo  portraying “Achong could Not Stand the Labour Pain,” and Queen (Evelyn Wellington) portrayng “The Cat helped the PNM to win the THA elections.” Today, the seven-day programme of activities organised by the Couva Carnival Committee ends with the Parade of Bands (starting at 11 am) for the Band of the Year title with the prize structure being - 1st. - $7,000; 2nd - $4,000;  3rd - $3,000;  4th - $2,000; and 5th - $1,000.
