Sugar Mike’s revenge put on hold

SUGAR MIKE will have to wait a little longer to avenge his defeat in the Veuve Cliquot Ponsardin Champagne Stakes. The 2003 and 2004 Horse of the Year had an excellent gallop over 1000 metres on Sunday morning, completed in 1:00.83 seconds. But when entries were taken yesterday for the Stakes And Lower race over 1350 metres to be run off on Saturday, only four horses were entered and the Arima Race Club had no alternative but to cancel the race. Sugar Mike was beaten into third place in the “Champagne” over 1600 metres by stablemate Fantastic Story and Outswinger.  Of the four horses entered, three were from the Grant Lourenco barn — Sugar Mike, Twice Infallible and Fantastic Story, while the other, Invincibility who galloped over 800 metres in 47.78 seconds on Sunday, is being trained by Jack Debideen.

Meanwhile, Rebel Music showed he was in tune with an excellent gallop over 800 metres on Sunday, timed in 48.89 seconds. And Phantom Menace showed he was ready for all rivals in the Starlight Stakes over 1350 metres, when he stepped 1000 metres in 1:02.99 seconds. But the gallop of the morning came from Sparklin Halo who zipped over the turf course in 47.57 seconds for an 800 metres run. Also showing good form were Fortunate Flag and Honor Bound, working in tandem to clock 49.63 seconds for 800 metres. And The Night Man showed he will be hard to beat in the Royal Colours Classic over 1350 metres also on Saturday, when working together with speedster Isle Be True, he  clocked 49.70 seconds for an 800 metres spin. The disappointing Premier Attraction went over a similar trip on the turf course, completing the run in a good 49.02 seconds
