‘Angel’, Dottie’s Way on the up

TRAINERS continued to give their runners light preparations on the exercise course at Santa Rosa Park, Arima yesterday. But a sign emerged from some quarters that they will soon be stepping up their work. The first impression of it came early in the morning from the Glenn Mendez barn. The triple crown winning trainer sent out Fearless Angel among his first batch, just as the light was peeping out. And the American-bred three-year-old maiden did not disappoint, breezing the last 800 metres of the course in 50.16 seconds.

The effort under champion apprentice Gary Laban earned a “good” in the remarks column of the Arima Race Club official clocker’s report. Another member of the stable, Life In the Sky paced the same surface and was noted asking for his head up the straight. The four-year-old which sent in his maiden certificate at the back end of last season averaged 14 seconds between the markers and completed the job in 55.83 seconds. Dottie’s Way, who put in two sound performances after a long lay-off showed signs of improvement.

The Bobby Persad-trained five-year-old mare which tangled with the top league two seasons ago, when under the care of  Kenneth de Silva Jnr “enjoyed” herself. The five-year-old mare, although under a tight hold was full of life, covering the last 1000 metres of the course in 1:04.93 seconds. She could bounce back to climb back up the ladder. Trainer Cyril “Greypatch” Arneaud sent Baby Mass and St Mike long and seemd to be concentrating on the classics with the locally-bred three-year-olds. The pair of maidens paced from the 1200-metres marker to the winning post in 1:27.72 seconds and continued their run before draining off in the backstretch.
