Dirt, vagrants mar Port-of-Spain
THE EDITOR: During the decade of the ’50s between 1950-1960, I lived at Duke Street, Port-of-Spain. I never liked Port-of-Spain for two reasons, the vagrancy problem and the state of the city. I always consider Port-of-Spain a very dirty city. Fifty years have passed; despite our nation’s wealth, rather than things having improved, they have gott worse. Port-of-Spain must be the dirtiest city in the world, just like Moruga beach is the dirtiest in the world. One of our radio stations suggested that the vagrants be sent to Nelson Island.
While I want to agree with this idea, I want to make another recommendation. Why not the Government allow the IRO to deal with this problem. Give them the necessary funding as they may see fit and give the IRO the authority to deal with this vexing problem. If the government cannot handle the vagrancy problem, the crime situation and keep the capital of our nation clean they should do the honourable thing, that is, resign and call fresh elections. Most of these vagrants have become the people they are, because of drugs. They are sick people and should be removed from the streets, immediately, not only in Port-of-Spain but across the nation. No human being in a right state of mind would want to sleep on the pavement.
