In defence of Cro Cro
THE EDITOR: First of all I wish to congratulate Cro Cro for winning the People’s choice in the just concluded calypso competition at the Dimanche Gras Show on Carnival Sunday night. Some people in the “Call In Programme” on radio accused Cro Cro of violence when he says cut off children’s hands when they fail their examination, but Cro Cro doesn’t actually mean that literally. If Vera Bhajan has no arms and did so well in her exams they may do better than her as she did it without arms. I wrote an article in Newsday September 13, 2004 about the courage and determination of Veera Bhajan entitled, “Veera young lady of true grit.”
In that letter I suggested to Cro Cro and Sugar Aloes to sing about success of Veera Bhajan, and it was time to sing elevating songs of love and freedom, and stop the social enslavement in this country. Whether Cro Cro took my advice I couldn’t say, but I am happy he sang that song congratulating Veera Bhajan. He sang of the children with all their God given faculties, who were not making use of their precious time as Veera did although she was handicapped. It is nice to see that Cro Cro sang such a positive song giving good advice to the children. We the true patriots in this country can see the direction in which this nation is heading, and if the calypsonians truly love this country and their families they would sing inspiring songs to wake up the wrong doers in authority who believe that they are a law unto themselves while destroying this country of ours.
I wish to also congratulate the manage of Exodus Steelband, the world champion, Mr Ainsworth Mohammed for receiving the people’s choice. Exodus did not complete the hat-trick, but the people’s choice virtually gave them the hat-trick, and victory. I hope that Cro Cro would continue to sing these inspiring songs while contributing to a better Trinidad where we are all facing a dismal future although this country is blessed with so much wealth yet poverty pervades many unfortunate people, and danger lurks in every corner even in broad daylight where insanity prevails with people who have no respect for the law. But continue to be a menace to the law-abiding citizens in this country. Let’s hope that Cro Cro and others would contribute to a better Trinidad with their songs of inspiration, love and unity.
