Making our roadways safer
THE EDITOR: Why are we sharing the public roadways with the following drivers? Drivers without driving permits and Insurance; Drivers without a valid driving permit or Insurance; Drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs; Drivers with poor vision (unable to read a vehicle number-plate from a distance of six car lengths; PH drivers (no insurance cover for hire; vehicles which are a danger of potential danger because of their condition — anything from overloading to defective brakes, lights, steering and tyres.
If we can take all these drivers and vehicles off the public highways, we could significantly reduce road accidents casualties — a responsibility we all share. On the subject of driving permits, consideration should be given to an increase from three years to ten years, and a renewal notice sent to the permit holders one month before the expiry date. The road user and the law, failure to comply such a person or persons should be prosecuted. Other consequences of offending drivers, could be the vehicle used to commit the offence (confiscated). If action is taken against all the offending drivers, this could reduce the volume of traffic on the public highway by 20 percent or more.
