UWI XI win in Chancellor’s Week cricket

SHIRLEY CLARKE fell nine runs short of a century, then claimed two wickets for 31 runs, as he guided a University of the West Indies XI to a three-wicket victory over a Trinidad and Tobago XI in a match to celebrate Chancellor’s Week yesterday. At the St Augustine Campus ground, Clarke made a splendid 91 and was supported by an equally enterprising 35 by national batsman Tishan Maraj, as the UWI team amassed 223 for seven wickets in their alotted 40 overs. Nesta Bodel also contributed 20 to the UWI XI total.


Magnum Nanan was best bowler for Trinidad and Tobago’s taking three wickets for 35 runs. But after the lunch interval the eventual Man of the Match, Clarke, secured victory for his team. Alston Bobb also had a two-wicket haul for UWI, taking two for 36 to bowl out their opponents for 196. National batsman Gregory Mahabir had a fine knock for 39, but the day belonged to Justin Julien who lashed a well played 88 in the losing cause. Sherwin Ganga, another Trinidad and Tobago cricketer scored 32.
