TT’s Leacock in ITF last ‘8’
BRIDGETOWN: Trinidad and Tobago’s Yolande Leacock easily despatched Barbadian Maya Morgan 6-1, 6-1 in the ITF International Junior Tennis championships in Barbados. Leacock was scheduled to challenge Francesca Kinsella of England. In a match dominated by the Trinidadian the younger Morgan fell to the experience and court-craft of the Florida-based Leacock in the Girls Under 18 match. Kinsella stopped American Juliana Naso 6-2, 6-1. Jamaican Arielle Von-Strolley also booked a place in the last eight with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Janique Jessurun of Suriname. Number one seed Jade Curtis of England, ranked No 150 in the world, also rolled along with an easy 6-1, 6-0 win over Megan Jones of the United States. Other Caribbean players stayed in contention in the tournament (First Caribbean International junior tennis championship). Top seed Alberton Richelieu of St Lucia booked a berth in yesterday’s under-18 boys quarter-finals with a hard fought 7-6, 6-3 victory over Englishman Harry Skinner at the hard courts of the National Tennis Centre. Richelieu, a 17 year-old Davis Cup player, fought off wretched serving and a dogged opponent to advance. He will oppose Barnabas Carrega of Italy in the last eight. (CMC)
