Naps squeak past Union Claxton Bay by one run

NAPARIMA Boys’ College booked a spot in the quarter-finals of the PowerGen InterCol Cricket championships with a tense, exciting one wicket victory over Union Claxton Bay Senior Comprehensive school on Thursday. The match was played at the Exchange sports ground. And in other local school cricket action, defending champions Barrackpore Secondary Comprehensive and former champs Princes Town Senior Comprehensive also booked places in the quarter-finals. Batting first after losing the toss, Princes Town trounced Pleasantville Senior Comprehensive by 114 runs in their quarter-final match played yesterday at Pleasantville Senior’s home ground.

And Barrackpore proved too good for newcomers ASJA Boys’ College of Charlieville, winning by 111 runs in their encounter played at Charlieville. Mark Gangapersad 42, Kevin Lamonte 38, Roger Ransome 27 and Avin Jaggessar 25 not out were the main scorers for Princes Town, which amassed 217 for nine off their allotted 30 overs. In reply, Pleasantville were bundled out for a meagre 111 with Negus Alexander (two for 21), Roger Ransome (two for 10), Jason Samuel (two for 24) and Jeremy Poliah (two for 17) the wicket-takers. The burly Gary Nandlal led the way for Barrackpore Secondary with a blistering 83 as the reigning champs tallied 202 for nine. Josiah Jugmohan was the main wicket-taker with four wickets for 34. Then spinners Gary Nandlal (four for 14) and Visham Ramroop (three for 11) combined to destroy ASJA Boys who were skittled out for 98.
