Those good old days

THE EDITOR: Allow me to comment on an article which appeared in the Sunday Newsday dated April 17, Newsday Section B (page 25) “Lifestyle”, written by Ms Halcian Pierre, headlined “Back in ‘de’ days”. After reading the article I decided to put pen to paper, and reminisce about the “good old days.” It was very refreshing to read the article. As I write this letter I am in the company of background music being played on the radio, Radio Gold 99.5 FM, so I am in a “back-in-times” mood again.

Getting back to Ms Pierre’s article, you had me smiling while reading and remembering the days. Allow me to quote from the article, “Fellas wore jim-boots and watchekong, crepe soles came later along with Dorics and  Bata bullets . . .” (end of quote) How many remembered scrubbing the watchekong sneakers, then putting them to dry in de hot sun, then later applying “whitening” on your shoes. Also remember when it was ten cents to travel from Ariapita Avenue, Woodbrook, to downtown in a bus; and 25 cents from Woodbrook to downtown in the 1970s.

What about “Pit” my favouorite place in the cinema, paying 50 cents. Half day for cricket in the Oval. One cent got you three Crix. A tin of condensed milk was 35 cents, and I could go on and on with my memories. Thank you again Ms Pierre, I really treasured those days, ask if they will ever come back. Well, it is difficult to say. Keep up the good work.
