Runako Morton hunts runs in Carib League

FORMER West Indies batsman Runako Morton, a Nevisian by birth who now lives in this country — says he has a goal of scoring 400 to 500 runs for his new club W Connection Wanderers in the Trinidad and Tobago domestic cricket league which starts this weekend. Morton who is married to a Trinidadian, will play his second match of the season when Wanderers face CLICO Preysal in a match this weekend at Gilbert Park, California in the Carib National League.

Other games this weekend include Queen’s Park against First Citizens Bank Clarke Road at the Oval,  Alescon Comets meet Ceramic Merryboys at Pierre Road. Morton’s first appearance in domestic cricket came last week in the Carib Shield final in which Wanderers were beaten by Powergen. While admitting his performance was below par then, Morton said he  intends to do better this time around in the fifth round of matches in the Carib National League.

Morton welcomed the launch of the West Players Association Benevolent Fund which he described as a good move to help players after their life in cricket. He noted it was good that even the past players can still benefit from this gesture. WIPA president Dinanath Ramnarine revealed at a press conference on Thursday that players past and present will benefit from the fund.

Morton, a powerful right handed batsman, describes the local domestic cricket league as much more organised than back in his native Nevis. He expressed the view that in the region, there are already good facilities which can be compared to anywhere else in the world and therefore technology should be the means by which players get the advantage. He feels also that players on the West Indies team may have been unable to perform at their best in the current series against South African because of the sponsorship impasse which preceded the tour.
