Sir Viv — India’s cricket coach?
WEST Indies cricket legend Sir Viv Richards has hinted he might be interested in becoming India’s new coach. The former West Indies skipper who was also an ex-West Indies team coach, does not have a formal coaching qualification. Current Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore and Australians Greg Chappell, Geoff Marsh, Dean Jones and Tom Moody have all been linked with the job. But during a recent visit to Delhi, Sir Viv said: "What I have is the experience of playing in 121 Tests. I know I have a sound knowledge of the game." India are looking for a new coach after New Zealander John Wright gave up the job following the recent home series against Pakistan. Although he refused to give a direct answer about his possible interest, Richards said: "There is nothing wrong in having a foreign coach. The game is getting globalised and this way we can learn from each other." In 121 Tests, Richards who is also known as the ‘Master Blaster’, terrorised opposition bowlers in scoring 8,540 runs at an excellent average of 50.23, which included 24 centuries, 45 half-centuries and a Test best of 291. In the one-day arena, Richards played in 187 games, scoring 6,721 runs at an average of 47.0, with 11 centuries and 45 half-centuries and a best score of 189 not out which at the time was the highest score in one-dayers. Richards has also hailed Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar as a "legend". Tendulkar has hit 34 Test centuries, a record he shared with compatriot Sunil Gavaskar, but did not manage one against Pakistan. Meanwhile, Indian cricket chiefs insist they will not be rushed into naming a successor to Wright, who stepped down after five years in charge. With India’s next assignment — a one-day series in Sri Lanka — still three months away, the BCCI is in no hurry to appoint a successor despite Sri Lanka and South Africa also chasing new coaches.
