South Africa go for 3-0 series win

BRIDGETOWN: The West Indies can expect no reprieve from South Africa when the final Test of the Digicel Series bowls off tomorrow at the Antigua Recreation Ground (ARG). Despite winning the last two Tests by handsome margins, South Africa have indicated their unwillingness to let up and captain Graeme Smith said they would play just as hard in the final Test.

"One thing that eight or nine months of tough times taught us was that you can’t afford to take a Test match win or Test match form for granted, so definitely we’ll be out there performing well for those five days," Smith said.

South Africa took a winning 2-0 lead in the four-Test series when they routed the West Indies by an innings and 86 runs on Sunday in the third Test at Kensington Oval. Though South Africa have won their last three series against the West Indies, the capture of the Sir Vivian Richards Trophy took on special significance as South Africa had lost recent Test series to India, England and Sri Lanka.

Smith believes however that the team is on its way up and the series win represented South Africa’s turning the corner on its recent form.

"I think teams go through different periods and different phases in their development and I think we are starting to step out of that phase now."

However, while Smith has sounded an ominous warning to the West Indies, the Proteas will also be wary of at least one Windies player — Brian Lara.

The Antigua Recreation Ground has been a happy hunting ground for the Prince of Port-of-Spain who struck his two world record Test scores of 375 and 400 not out, on this ground, against England.

Lara’s last innings at the ARG was against England last year when he broke Matthew Hayden’s then world record score of 380.

Even more ominous for the South Africans are the similarities the last England series and this current series.

Last year, the England team had already secured that series 3-0 and were looking for a historic whitewash when Lara stepped in.

In this series, the South Africans have already secured an unassailable 2-0 lead. Only time will tell if Lara and the Windies will end this series on a high note.
