$30,000 at stake in Pro Bowl
THE VICTORIOUS team at the T&T Pro League Pro Bowl competition (which will be staged at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella) will walk away with a winner-take-all $30,000 jackpot. This disclosure was made yesterday at the launch of the 2005 competition, at the Media Room, Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo. According to the League’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dexter Skeene, the jackpot can climb to $50,000 as a percentage of gate receipts, in the three-week long event, will be added to the original earnings. Among the sponsors for the three-week event are Oscar Francois Limited and the National Flour Mills (NFM). And both firms will be providing hampers to the runners-up, as well as the third and fourth placed teams. The quarterfinal round will be contested on May 13 with a triple-header at Marabella. From 5 pm, CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh will oppose Caledonia AIA/Fire, reigning champs W Connection will meet North East Stars at 7 pm and, two hours later, United Petrotrin will square off against Defence Force. According to the tournament rules, Tobago United will receive a bye into the semi-final round as they were the first team to be pulled during yesterday’s random draw. The semis will be played on May 20 while the final and third-place playoff scheduled for May 27. Skeene said that the tournament, which is in its second annual year, "is focused on giving sponsors and fans value for money." Among the innovations for the 2005 version are live entertainment, giveaways (including gate hampers) and a "Kick for Kash" penalty shootout competition with patrons vying for cash prizes worth $1,000. Skeene, who stated that the "Pro League is resolute, committed and undaunted in its commitment to the sustainable development of professional football in Trinidad and Tobago," also emphasised that "it is imperative for Trinidad and Tobago to have a professional league if we are serious about qualifying for a World Cup." Focussing on the League’s community development programme, the former Strike Squad midfielder/striker said, "there must be an emotive link between clubs and supporters. "Clubs must work in their communities to build support," he continued. "People must be made to identify with the club. The community must feel a sense of ownership and want to be involved in all its activities."
