Forde takes match sprint but Internationals win series

BARBADIAN Barry Forde completed an impressive win in the match sprint of the Beacon Insurance-sponsored West Indies vs The World Cycling Series at the Arima Municipal Stadium velodrome as the curtains came down on this year’s ride.

Forde who had just the day before, sent a warning to the international cyclists by smashing the Flying 200 Metres record, went to the venue on Sunday, totally unaware of the task ahead of him, despite a sterling performance when he joined the regional team on Saturday.

And with rain completely washing out the entire event that day, he may have had just a slight inclination of the possinle result on the frinal day.

Whether he was right in his thinking or not, his performance was good enough to earn him the top spot and hand the West Indies team their last win for the series.

Not surprisingly the International cyclists may have had the better of the series, but it was now a clear indication that regional cycling had made huge strides. Forde’s win came ahead of Scotsman Craig McLean and German Jan Van Eigden while Yosmany Poll, the Cuban was the next best finisher for the regional team in fourth.

Otherwise it was another day of international dominance in the series, and none other than the Argentine Sebastian Donadio’s name would ring a bell.

On Sunday the powerful Argentine out-classed all in the feature 15-lap Madison race and secured another international win at the velodrome along with countryman Jorge Ruschansky.

England’s Johnathan Norfolk who had also been outstanding at the series, continued his string of impressive performances with a victory in the Ministry of Sport three-lap sprint in five minutes and two seconds. Ruschansky finished a distant second followed by Forde.

Donadio was voted joint Most Outstanding International Cyclists.

He received the award along with Norfolk. Abraham, winner of the opening 14-lap event along with the 14-lap race around Market Square in the sister-isle of Tobago recently, was named the Most Outstanding Cyclist on the West Indies team.
