Inactive Ames slips down rankings

LONDON: Trinidadian international golfer Stephen Ames, idle since his late April appearance at the Shell Houston Open, has slipped two places in the world rankings this week. In the latest ratings released on Monday, Ames who missed the Zurich Classic and Wachovia Championship in the past two weeks, is 26th — down two positions from his previous ranking.

There is no change in the top five positions, although Fiji’s world number two Vijay Singh has gained on Tiger Woods, the American world number one, after winning the Wachovia Championship last weekend.

South African Ernie Els remains number three, followed by American Phil Mickelson and Retief Goosen of South Africa. Ames, who had a solid 11 top-10 finishes in 2004, has had a relatively tame start to the current season, securing only one top-10 position to date – sixth at the MCI Heritage in mid-April.

The 40-year-old Caribbean player, who holds Canadian citizenship, has had four finishes in the top-25, including 21st at the Shell Houston two-and-a-half weeks ago.
