Newsday educates, informs and instructs
THE EDITOR: Government must not interfere with the press by putting any machinery to control it. The word press is used to indicate journalism. When we speak of the press we mean the influence for good or evil which newspapers exercise upon individuals and nations. In former times, it was said that there were three powers in a country — King, House of Lords and House of Commons. Of late, the press has become the fourth power.
Once an Englishman was asked to point out the most striking feature of modern civilisation and said: “Neither the machine gun nor aeroplane but the daily newspaper.” Such indeed is the power of the press. It can save or damn an individual in 24 hours. The birth or death of greatness in the modern world is the work of the press.
The press is a power for the education of a people. A newspaper is a summary of current history. A complete newspaper like the Newsday deals with almost all matters of public interest. The Newsday educates public opinion on the burning questions of the day, giving information and also instruction. The power of the press is proved by the fact that dictators generally keep the press under the strictest control. People should read the newspapers everyday particularly the Newsday so that they can safely say their day was the happiest day.
