Pakistan trounce Antigua by 248 runs


ST JOHN’S: Shahid Afridi helped Pakistan engineer a 248-run win over Antigua and Barbuda in a warm-up match at the Antigua Recreation Ground yesterday.


Afridi slammed a 104 off just 46 balls, laced with 11 fours and eight sixes as Pakistan raced to an outstanding 366 for seven off their 50 overs.


He was supported by Yousaf Youhana’s 87 which came from 79 balls with seven fours and three sixes. Wicketkeeper/batsman Kamran Akmal hit 56 not out from 42 balls with six fours and two sixes and vice-captain Younis Khan made 53 from 83 balls with three fours.


The best bowler for the Antiguan side was 17-year-old medium pacer Chad Hampson who had two for 47 from seven overs while pacer Wilden Cornwall finished with one for 51 from 10 overs. Medium-pacer Carl Simon had two for 69 from 10 overs.


Afridi also starred with the ball as he took four wickets for a mere six runs from 6.4 overs with his legspinners as Antigua was sent crashing to 118 all out. Pacer Shabbir Khan supported with two for 19 and Shoaib Malik had two for 20. Only Cornwall with 46 offered any resistance.


Pakistan will now go on to play the West Indies in the first one-day international of a three-match series in St Vincent on Wednesday.


The following two games will be played in St Lucia on Saturday and Sunday.
