Awaiting justice and fair play

THE EDITOR: An individual was held with a forty foot container of whisky and electronics at the CES Station last week by diligent work of the Customs Preventive Department attempting to evade the state of duties and VAT as he declared the container only had gypsum board which is duty free, VAT free. This individual is a habitual smuggler having been charged and fined on several previous occasions by Customs Preventive Branch.

What bothers this writer is that certain people were able to beg off for this man allowing him to pay a token fine of TT$25,000 plus the payment of correct duties to reinstate his merchandise. “A little tap on his knuckles” will not stop him from doing it again next month! Mr Minister, as an employee of the Preventive Branch, I am asking you to intervene before this man gets back his goods with this minimum fine. Seize the merchandise as he is a habitual offender and fine him according to the law. Awaiting your justice and fair play intervention.
