In support of media code

THE EDITOR: I agree with the Telecommunications Authority. What is passing for journalism, as well as radio and TV programming, are very appalling. Most of the announcers cannot speak properly; some do not even have the voice quality to be on air, and bad grammar is the order of the day. The electronic media is leading the country astray. Most Trinbagonians no longer believe in themselves and in what they have created, because the media has been feeding us with mostly, and in some cases only, foreign fare. And so our grandparents who have sweated and toiled, who went to jail and were injured for calypso, pan and the arts in this country are now looking on with dismay.

We have talk-show hosts like the "Gladiator" whose radio programme is among the more popular, who insults and curses the public. He has neither a good voice, nor does he speak properly. He thrives on bacchanal and if you have a viewpoint different from his, he cuts you off and curses. "Damn" and "blasted" are not words for people with class to use on air. Listen to the foreigners whom we try to emulate, and hear their language; Howard Stern is now looking for a job because of the vulgarity in the contents of his show.

One lady who was at the Telecommunications Authority conference talked about the moral stance of most of the objectors. I want it to be known that morals are what make people abide by the law. Persons who have morality high on their agenda would not steal, take bribes, kidnap, kill or sell cocaine and guns. Commission, you have my blessing.
