Bajan Test men in Kensington picture

BRIDGETOWN: Thirty-five Barbadians who played representative cricket for West Indies in Tests, One-Day Internationals or tour matches, assembled on the field at Kensington Oval here Friday for an historic picture.

The official gathering was to mark the last Test to be played at the region’s most revered venue before renovations start on some of the stands in early June in preparation for the 2007 World Cup.

Located just a couple miles to the west of the capital city, Kensington will host the World Cup final and other key matches of the one-day tournament two years from now. It was the venue for the first ever Test match in the West Indies against England in 1930. To date, 43 Tests have been played here including the first match of the Digicel series against Pakistan, which West Indies won by 276 runs yesterday with a day-and-a-half to spare.

The victory was the 21st for West Indies at Kensington, where they have lost seven times with 15 draws. Between 1935 and 1994 West Indies had been unbeaten in Tests at Kensington before losing to Australia a decade ago. One notable absentee from the picture taking was the world’s greatest ever all-rounder Sir Garfield Sobers, who is in Britain on work commitments.

Among those present were two of the famous 3Ws of the 1940s and 50s - Sir Clyde Walcott and Sir Everton Weekes, the fearsome fast bowling duo of the 1960s, Wes Hall and Charlie Griffith, and the durable opening batting pair, Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes, who dominated from the late 1970s through to turn of the 90s. Also present was another legend, big fast bowler Joel Garner, who played between 1977 and 1987.

The full list of those present: Sir Everton Weekes, Sir Clyde Walcott, Michael Frederick, Charlie Griffith, Wes Hall, Seymour Nurse, Robin Bynoe, Norman Marshall, Cammie Smith, David Holford, John Shepherd, Rawle Brancker, Tony White, Richard Edwards, David Allan, Peter Lashley, Geoffrey Greenidge, Tony Howard, Collis King, Wayne Daniel, Albert Padmore, David Murray, Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes, Joel Garner, Ezra Moseley, Alvin Greenidge, Thelston Payne, Milton Small, Carlisle Best, Roland Holder, Vasbert Drakes, Philo Wallace, Adrian Griffith, Hendy Bryan.
