Ames finishes 30th at Memorial
DUBLIN, OHIO: Stephen Ames, the Trinidad and Tobago international golf star, shot a disappointing final round 74 and finished 30th at the Memorial Tournament on Sunday evening. Ames ended with a three-under 285 total, 13 shots behind Bart Bryant, who fired a final round four-under 68 to snatch a one-stroke win over fellow American Fred Couples. Bryant finished at 16-under 272 at the Muirfield Village Golf Club for his second career title, topping Couples. American Tiger Woods, a three-time Memorial champion, carded a final round 68 to finish in a tie for third with Bo Van Pelt and Jeff Sluman at 12-under 276. Ames, struggling to recapture the brilliant 2004 form that saw him take 11 top-ten finishes, had started the day in 24th position after he carded a splendid four-under 68 on Saturday, his best round of the US$5.25 million tournament. But his effort on Sunday turned out to be his worst of the four rounds. He started well, with three birdies on the first five holes, but he bogeyed at the ninth, 10th, and 14th holes and double-bogeyed on the 11th to sink to his two-over final round score. Ames, the first Caribbean player to qualify for the US PGA Tour, is currently ranked 31st in the world after beginning the year in the top-20.
