TT out to defend regional amateur boxing crown


ST THOMAS, US VIRGIN ISLANDS: The 21st Caribbean Amateur Boxing Association (CABA) Championship later this month has attracted 15 countries, including Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago, who shared the overall title last year.


TT, who won the 2004 senior award at home and Guyana, the reigning junior champions will field teams in an overall contingent of 178 boxers and 112 officials for the June 16-23 event. Competition will be held in all 11 weight-categories recognised by the International Amateur Boxing Association and the participants have been divided into five divisions. The CARIFTA Games junior section of the competition will comprise the Cadets (Under-17) and the Juniors (Under-19) and the other three divisions are women, novices and open classes.


Fifteen female boxers have registered to participate. Other activities of the championship will be the Annual General Meeting of CABA on June 20 and 21, and an Anti-Doping workshop for all boxers and officials on June 22.


Participating countries also include former champions Barbados, Bahamas and Jamaica and the entry list is completed by Aruba, Bermuda, French Guiana, Dominica, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Martinique, St Lucia, St Maarten and the hosts US Virgin Islands.
