TTOC hosts 3rd annual Youth Camp
ATHLETES between the ages of 11 and 16 will take part in the third annual Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) Youth Camp. The programme, which will focus on the pillars of the Olympic Movement — sport, culture, environment and education, will run from July 9-20 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo. All TTOC affiliates may submit one male and one female athlete for the camp, while members of the wider sporting community can register at the cost of $100 per person. TTOC Olympic Academy director Brian Lewis stated: "using these pillars, we prepare young athletes to draw on their involvement in sport to make a contribution to our society. "This year’s theme was selected so that, from the first day, the campers would be aware of what we expect of them," Lewis affirmed. "It’s not a camp where you sit back and let others get involved. Participation is key." Among the workshops, activities and topics planned for the camp are goal-setting, conflict resolution and ethics. Lewis made a call for former TTOC Youth campers to work as facilitators in the 2005 event. "In 2004 we invited the inaugural campers to become facilitators as a way of furthering their development," Lewis said. "A third of them took up this challenge. "This is quite significant as one of our main aims is youth empowerment" Commenting on the TTOC’s role in the camp, Lewis stated, "we acknowledge our role in providing young athletes with critical skills that will equip them to compete on the international stage. "The Olympic Youth Camp creates the forum for the athletes to acquire these skills, moulding more well-rounded and holistic individuals," he added.
