When will enough be enough?
THE EDITOR: Should this latest move by the Speaker of the House to have MP Sharma ejected from the hallowed halls of our Red House (not Mr Manning’s) be considered vindication, or incrimination, of the ruling dispensation? A nation under seige from bullet, bandit and kidnappers, with a worried business oligarchy finally aroused from the overlong distraction of profit, has been at this crucial time treated to the spectacle of what can only be called "majority" spite and malice. When members of the Opposition have called for urgent discussion in Parliament of the crime situation, or even those 9000 plus (and their dependents) from central tossed and left to moulder on the breadline, they have been summarily dismissed by a Speaker who at the last sitting was quick to call on Police action in order to have his order upheld. Could not that time have been better utilised formulating ways and means to effectively deal with a murder total already out of control? Just what is important to the present administration — retention of political domination or effective and equitable governance of the people, the job they have been mandated to do, and are failing so miserably in every quarter, from health to education — even social services. Would that such alacrity and enthusiasm could be observed in any one of the areas so vital to the well being of the populace! Mixed messages are also sent by a PM who congratulates one of two MPs jointly accused of accepting bribes for his principled resignation whilst not even referring to the other? Such integrity and morality in public office is hard to comprehend. Ken Valley declares that he is "frightened" at the fact that the Police did not jump when told to jump and forcibly eject a sitting MP. He is "frightened," not of rampant crime. He is "frightened" because the Police exercised more common sense in dealing with Mr Sharma than he might have credited them with. Welcome Mr Valley to the club of frightened citizens of TT living in fear of their lives and property, thanks to "kind" and good PNM Government. In the interim the murder toll climbs relentlessly. Gangs at war, now Government at war, with the people being further polarised — what next? Who do we hold responsible for the present dilemma and how do we get out of this uncontrolled morass which the PM now assures us is a "temporary" one! Hopefully the families of all those "temporarily" murdered, kidnapped and robbed will receive some consolation from his latest statement — the rest of us can only hope that we won’t be included in those "temporary" statistics which have become a permanent feature of life in TT since the PNM returned to power.
