Martyr? More Panday propaganda
THE EDITOR: The political situation in Trinidad and Tobago has taken a dramatic turn. The behavioural pattern of members of the UNC both in and out of Parliament seems to be one of constant confrontation aimed at destabilising the peace of the country. The Leader of the Opposition and his colleagues were charged for an offence. Bail was posted for them of which Mr Panday’s colleagues availed themselves of the opportunity while Mr Panday did not, opting instead to remain in prison. Now what political points does he hope to gain by his behavioural pattern?
The people of this country do not suffer from amnesia to the extent that they cannot remember that three ministers in the last UNC government headed by Mr Panday resigned charging the UNC government with mass corruption which led to the demise of that government. The airport scandal is still ongoing. And it seems that more and more charges are to be laid as new evidence is discovered. Can any government that is worth its salt simply sit by and sweep these massive implications under the carpet? One should remember that it is the hardworking tax-payer that has to foot the bill for generations to come while some politicians fill their pockets with taxpayers’ money. The Government therefore, has every right to pursue these inquiries in the interest of the taxpayer.
Members of the UNC in their areas are shooting their mouths all over the place because of Mr Panday’s detention. The point is that Mr Panday opted for this. And this should be told to the people instead of trying to make Mr Panday a martyr. The fact is that trying to make Mr Panday a martyr and provoking a matter are two different things altogether. The UNC political scouts should embark on a reconstruction mission instead of going about with false propaganda in order to score cheap political points. For a reconstruction mission could save the party from self-destruction.
