Ganga to lead Windies in Sri Lanka

BRIDGETOWN: Opening batsman Daren Ganga will captain the West Indies reserve team in a one-month tour of Sri Lanka starting June 19, the West Indies Cricket Board announced yesterday.

The leading players are expected to be batsman Marlon Samuels and allrounder Dwayne Smith, along with fast bowlers Tino Best and Jermaine Lawson, and wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh.

Batsman Runako Morton, who turns 27 next month, is the oldest member of the squad. Ganga, a 26-year-old Trinidadian, is the only other player over 25 years old.

The 15-member squad will play three matches over four days and five one-day matches against Sri Lanka’s reserve players. The matches will be in Dambulla and Colombo, with all the limited overs matches in Colombo.

The tour is part of the programme to develop young West Indies talent.

Ganga, who played in the First Test against South Africa in March, has played 31 Test matches and 28 One-Day Internationals since he debuted in 1998-1999.

Only two players in the side, spinner Nikita Miller and batsman Ryan Ramdass, have not played at the international level before.

The tour will overlap the West Indies senior team tour of Sri Lanka, which starts July 1.
