Alkins off to join WI rugby


RUGBY Player of the Year Graeme Alkins left here yesterday for the Cayman Islands, to link up with other members of the West Indies 7s team for the Deloitte Cayman Islands International Rugby 7s Tournament.


The tournament will have its first scrum on Saturday, and is expected to be completed next day.


Meanwhile, ex-national skipper Sean O’Farrell has been appointed coach of the Under-19 squad preparing for the North American and West Indies (NAWIRA) zone Under-19 World Championship qualifiers. He will have as his assistant Maurice Valere.


This series begins on July 17 in Kingston, Jamaica, and is scheduled to continue until July 24. This year’s local rugby season will get underway on June 25 with the popular Trinidad Northern Touch Rugby series.


But the regular season will scrum off when arch-rivals Caribs and Trinidad Northerns hook-up for the Robert Farfan Memorial on July 2.
