Commenting on the spate of fatal crashes, ACP Mobile Nazamul Hosein said he was distressed and appalled by the number of road deaths. He said the loss of lives could have been avoided.

ACP Hosein appealed to motorists to exercise more caution. He pointed out that with the rainy season, roads are slippery and there is a higher risk of accidents.

"If people obey the simple elementary rules of driving, acidents will be prevented," he said.

ACP Hosein said police patrols will be out in full force today and Monday to deal with errant motorists.

Tragic end to club lime

Dying girl’s cries for help not heard

A DYING ACCIDENT victim cried out for help after she and her two friends were involved in a vehicular accident on the Uriah Butler Highway early yesterday morning.

Tragically, 21-year-old Shivani Roopnarine’s desperate cries were not heard and she died before help arrived.

Roopnarine, daughter of Pablo Roopnarine, proprietor of CIL Furnishings, of Rushworth Street, San Fernando, along with her friends Zwanet Thea Mascall, 21, of Sanco Road, New Grant, and Onika Cummings, 21 of Inverness Road, Cocoyea, were returning home after a girl’s lime at Club Zen in Port-of- Spain when they got into the accident.

Roopnarine, who was in the front passenger seat, sustained severe internal injuries but managed to free herself from the wreckage, which landed in a drain off the southbound lane of the highway.

She called for help but failed to catch the attention of passing motorists and collapsed and died among some tall bushes at the side of the highway.

Her body was discovered by police officers who arrived on the scene to investigate the crash.

According to reports, at around 4.30 am, Mascall, a teacher at St Paul’s Anglican School and a part-time student at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine, was driving south along the highway when she lost control of the vehicle a short distance from the Gasparillo exit.

The vehicle slammed into an electricity pole and flipped over several times before landing on its hood in a shallow ditch which was filled with water.

Mascall and Cummings — a Petrotrin employee — were rushed to the San Fernando General Hospital where they are warded in a critical condition. District Medical Officer Dr Bahadoorsingh visited the scene and ordered that Roopnarine’s body be removed to the San Fernando mortuary for post-mortem on Tuesday.

Cpl Surujbally of the St Margaret’s Police Station is continuing investigations.
