Duncan, Cabral, McShine strike athletic Gold
MARCUS Duncan, the Silver Bullet sprinter struck gold in the Boys Under-20 100 metres race when he recorded a quick hand recorded time of 10.40 seconds in the final at the Sagicor National Junior Track and Field Championship at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, yesterday. His teammate Marlon Douglas was runner-up in 10.56, while Rueben Hewitt of QRC was third in 10.58. In the Girls equivalent, Monique Cabral of Memphis eked out a well deserved win in 11.78 seconds. Jurlene Francis (Concorde) followed her home in 11.95 with Michelle Cuthbert (Neon Trackers) getting the bronze in 12.59. Keston Bledman (Simplex) took the gold in the Boys Under-18 100 metres in 10.49 while Memphis’ Keron Anthony 10.64 got silver ahead of Kwasie King (Health Olympians) 10.86. Only moments earlier Shade St Louis (Memphis) recorded an impressive 11.70 seconds to take the gold in the Girls Under-18 100 metres final. Jurnell Francis (Concorde) was a distant second in 11.95 and Cadajah Spencer (Dovers) got bronze in 11.97. Meanwhile, Pilar McShine made light work of the 1500 metres girls Under-20 final when she disposed of a small field to claim the gold medal. The Rasta hair-styled Success/Laventille Composite student returned a time of four minutes, 52.07 seconds for the top spot, well ahead of teammate Alana Williams 5:29.27 seconds. Leanne McMeo got bronze in 5:48.93. Garvin Nero (Memphis Pioneers) as expected won gold in a time of four minutes, 04.82 seconds for the 1500 metres for boys Under-20. Nero, a member of an athletic family which is popularly known for their exploits in long distance events, led the race from start to finish. Sietou Joseph got the silver in 4:25.03, while Marlon Skinner clocked the same time as the runner-up for a 1-2-3 finish for Memphis. The Girls Under-18 final in the 1500 metres event was won by another Success/Laventille Composite student, Samantha Shukla, in 5:04.03. On the field Precious Rogers of Toco Tafac had a lot to be happy about. She leapt a distance of 5.43 metres to win the Long Jump for Girls Under-18.
